workshop details
Pastel is an exciting medium which incorporates the elements of both painting and drawing, but with its own unique possibilities. This workshop will introduce you to the potential of pastel work, with an emphasis on experimentation and a playful approach.
The workshop will cover:
- brief introduction & history of pastel drawing
- what pastel is & overview of the various types, range of colours, etc.
- demonstration of different ways of working with pastel (e.g. layering, feathering, mixing colours)
- demonstration of the use of various papers & colour backgrounds.
We will then experiment with different techniques and exercises, followed by a larger work (subject of artists choosing) in the last two hours.

equipment and materials
Please bring with you:
- pastels (not oil pastels) – if you don't already own any, a set of 12 Mungyo pastels is a good start (approx. $13 from Maleny Art Supplies)
- a selection of papers in varying sizes – cartridge paper is ok but anything more fragile is not suitable. If you have small off-cuts of other papers (pastel papers, water colour, even builders paper) these can be good for experimenting with. For the final drawing, a large sheet of good quality paper such as Arches, Stonehenge, Fabriano or any pastel paper would be good
- workable fixative (or hairspray)
- fine rubber gloves
- protective mask (optional, to protect against fixative and pastel dust)
- backing board and bulldog clips
- charcoal or conte pencil(s).
The following will be supplied:
- acrylic paints for undercoats
- small samples of pastel papers to try.
